While planning for a superfoods workshop I hosted last week, I began experimenting with some new smoothie recipes so I could really “WOW” the group. I wanted to do something a little different then my expected green smoothie, so I decided on using ACAI BERRY in hopes of creating a beautiful pink/purple smoothie that was just as appealing to the eye as it was to the palate.
Acai berries are small, purple berries that grow on palm trees in the tropical regions of Central and South America. They are considered a superfood because of the amazingly high level of nutrients that they offer us. They are:
- packed with antioxidants, which help keep our immune systems strong and help our bodies combat all of the toxins we come in contact with on a day to day basis. They are essential in fighting cancer and preventing disease because they help the body combat damage from free radicals (which cause aging in our bodies and on our skin).
- loaded with healthy fats, particularly oleic and linoleic acids, which are terrific for helping our skin and hair shine.
- a great source of protein and fiber.
- high in vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are essential for optimum health and high-vibe living.
After a few tries at the blender, I came up with this recipe:
1/2 pack frozen Acai puree (UNSWEETENED!!) – find at your health food store in the freezer section
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup cashew milk (or other nut milk of your choice)
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
As you can see, acai isn’t the only superfood in this mix – I wanted to make this smoothie a real super-powered meal, so I included hemp seeds and chia seeds, both radiant superfoods that are beginning to show their face more and more. Hemp seeds are a complete protein and are actually one of the best sources of plant protein around. They are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, which support our brain health and help fight inflammation in the body (see ya disease).
Chia seeds are also packed with omega-3’s and offer us both soluble and insoluble fiber. This means that these little seeds help keep us full for a long amount of time and are a great weight loss food – high in nutrition, low in calories. Chia seeds are also packed with antioxidants which, as stated before, help to keep us young, keep our bodies healthy, and keep us feeling great.
Superfoods enable us to get a high-dose of nutrition into our bodies that our typical diet may be lacking. This smoothie is a great way to fill some of the nutritional gaps that you may have, plus it also tastes great! To ensure that SUPERFOODS contain all of their natural nutrition, it is best to buy them in their raw and organic form.
