Chocolate Mylk with “Superpowers”

I have been trying to incorporate some more of my favorite superfoods into my daily routine, and I wanted to come up with something a little different then a typical fruit and veggie smoothie.  After a few rounds of measurements and taste tests, this is what I came up with:

(serves 1)chocolate mylk

1 cup cashew milk

1/2 banana

3-4 teaspoons raw cacao powder

1 teaspoon raw maca powder

1 teaspoon chaga mushroom powder

1 teaspoon pure maple syrup

Sprinkle of cinnamon

Ice cubes (5-7)

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.  This drink is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and give you a great boost in energy.

So, you may be wondering, what’s so special about all of these ingredients? Let me explain.

Raw cacao is real chocolate, harvested right out of the cacao bean and separated from the cacao butter.  It is FULL of immune boosting AND free-radical fighting antioxidants, and contains a few chemicals (theobromine, phenylethylamine and anandamine to be exact) that make us feel happy and in love (the same chemicals that are released naturally by the body when we do actually fall in love).  This powder also contains high levels of iron and magnesium, and is a great addition to SO MANY desserts.

Maca is known as an adaptogen, which means that it helps our body adapt to the everyday stresses and anxieties that we may encounter, helping us deal with them in a more balanced way.  It nourishes our endocrine system, which regulates many of the important functions in our body, and can help to boost our stamina, enhance our libido, regulate our hormones, and provide us with sustained energy without the crash that we often feel from caffeine.  For women, it supports our fertility.  Maca is also loaded with many vitamins, minerals, amino acids and plant sterols, including vitamins B1, B2, B, C, D, E, iron, potassium, copper, magnesium, selenium, phosphorous and calcium, and is a great source of plant protein.

I first learned about Chaga Mushrooms from the always inspiring David Wolfe, and have since heard about their wondrous nutritional value time and time again.  Also known as “the king of the medicinal mushrooms”, chaga is estimated to be the second highest antioxidant food in the world, and is one of the most prized herbs in Chinese medicine .  It has been a large part of many, many cultures all around the world for many years, including the US (yay!), growing on Birch trees in the northern temperate climates.  It can be brewed into a tea or bought in a powdered form.  It pairs great with chocolate because of its slight vanilla flavor.
